Coach Developer and Team Culture Builder

Josh Sutcliffe is an internationally recognized Sport Coach Developer and Team Community Builder, whose journey from a passionate player to a distinguished coach has spanned two decades across multiple continents.

Player and Coach

Josh’s sporting career began with his childhood love for sports in Australia and New Zealand. Undersized for his position in rugby, he relied on a strong work ethic and technical skills to excel. His dedication earned him recognition, including the title of Most Outstanding Under 21 Player in South Australian Rugby in 2002 and selection to the Australian Universities XV in 2003. He capped his playing career with his selection for the Philippine Men’s National Team from 2007-2011.

Transitioning into coaching, Josh quickly demonstrated his knack for talent identification and development. He played a pivotal role in creating high-performance pathways for young players, contributing significantly to the local rugby scene in South Australia and beyond.

Stanford University and Beyond

In the USA, Josh’s coaching prowess shone during his tenure as Assistant Coach at Stanford University from 2004 to 2008. He then returned to Stanford in 2015 as Director/Head Coach, where he led both the men’s and women’s teams to unprecedented success. Under his guidance, Stanford Women’s Rugby consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally, with notable finishes in both 7s and XVs. Josh’s leadership was crucial during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, where he ensured the team's cohesion and performance remained strong.

Coach Developer and Mentor

Josh's impact extends beyond individual teams. As Coach Development Director for USA Rugby, he pioneered programs such as the USA Rugby High School Stars and Stripes program and the Elite Coach Development Program. These initiatives provided pathways for aspiring coaches, leading to significant advancements in the American rugby coaching landscape.

His mentorship has reached international levels, assisting coaches of national teams and varsity programs across the globe. He played a pivotal role in developing coach mentorship programs in the Philippines, aiming to elevate local coaching standards and foster player growth.
